who is everyones current fave director?
for me it has to be David O. Russell. I love Spanking the monkey, and saw his last movie yesterday: Three Kings. I thought the camera work at times was abit M*sturb*tery, but thats the only criticism i have becos on the whole his direction showed loads of flair.

I just saw X-2 so it's probably Bryan Singer at the moment.... re-watched X-Men and I'm about to watch Usual Suspects. Not seen Apt Pupil for a while but I remember it being quite good (Apart from David Schwimmer's moustache... yipes, just yipes )
Runners up being Joe Dante, Kevin Smith, Sam Raimi. With a bit of George Romero.

Sam Raimi, usually. He isn't the most talented director, but if you watch a Raimi movie you can tell. I am also a huge fan of Tarantino, Godard, Hitchcock, and Kevin Smith.

Like you say, Raimi isnt the most talented but his style is very cool.
Mine has to be David Fincher, without a doubt.

I'm sorry, I can't have a website on the guy and not come to his defence...
Sam Raimi : "NOT VERY TALENTED!?"
Have you guys not seen A Simple Plan? He ditched his trademark style and turned in an amzing character based thriller, with a couple of Oscar nominations to boot.
Also, although not as good, The Gift has some excellent performances in it, and again Raimi keeps his style to a minimum. Even Keanu Reeves was good in it.

I wouldn't really know, I don't really have a certain love or affection for any director.
I guess I like the Wachowski bros for creating action scenes like that. I like that Owata guy from the Seven Samurai for taking his time to create really human characters. I wish I could say I like Quentin Tarantino for his direction, but in my opinion it were his scripts that did the job. Steven Spielberg for creating the feeling that we were inside the war. I wouldn't know, to be honest.

Talking of contemporary directors, I think Steven Soderbergh is making the most consistently interesting and varied stuff around.
Who else can follow a fun heist movie like Oceans Eleven with a low-budget DV movie like Full Frontal and then go the other extreme and do something as asethically beautiful as Solaris. Three great movies, but completely styles and approaches. He’s always searching for new challenges. There’s nothing he can’t do - Trust me he's the best thing out there!
